How to Shop for Non-Toxic Bedding

Can the fabrics we sleep on impact our health? Let’s talk about it.

Our skin is our largest, most absorptive organ and anything that sits against it - such as clothing - can be taken in and impact metabolic functions. However, you might not know that the same goes for the sheets you curl up in for 8 hours a night.

Sleep is when our body does the most healing - however, most bedding is made from plastic - which is super toxic to your system. Microplastics have even been found in human heart tissues and linked to heart attack, stroke, and death (check out my full video coverage on the latter here).

And even those made from plant or silk-based fabrics can be dyed with synthetic dyes or synthetic treatments to make them ultra-soft - other forms of plastic! This is why it is so important to choose clean-choice fibers to sleep in - especially if you are a hot sleeper that sweats at night. Read more about this here. Therefore, the chemicals used in bedding production may be hindering this vital healing time.

Luckily, there are a couple bedding companies non-toxic materials and treatments. My top recommendations are AIZOME and Ettitude:

AIZOME

AIZOME has optimized bedding for healing with zero chemicals - so no endocrine disruptors such as BPA, phthalates, or PFAS ruining your sleep. Their sheets are made of traceable 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, perfect for sensitive skin.

AIZOME Indigo-dyed bedding

The magic is truly in their plant-based dyes (my favorite being indigo!).

They infuse their products with plants that have medicinal qualities such as indigo, Rubia (also known as madder), and sumac. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities of these herbs aid the body in the treatment of wounds and protect against pathogens.

Studies have proven that indigo is extremely effective at treating wounds - indigo was even worn by samurai to prevent infection of any wounds.

Indigo is also antibacterial and, when tested, AIZOME’s indigo-dyed pillowcase reduced the rate of bacterial growth by 70%. Hello, clear skin!

The patented ultrasound technology they use ensures the beautiful colors and properties last for years to come - so you and your loved ones can sleep deep and wake up feeling more refreshed and healed every day.
